Caste System

The Myrmex is a species of arthropods that dwell in underground hives. They follow a caste system, with each class having its own unique traits.

Myrmex Worker

The Worker is the main laborer of the hive and will often venture out to forage for food and other resources before bringing it back to the hive and storing it in cocoons. It will pick up items a player throws nearby and bring it to the hive.

It will sometimes transfer eggs, larvae, and pupae from the Queen's residence to the nursery rooms. This is the weakest Myrmex caste.

If they feel threatened, they can sting with their stinger, however they are not too strong. If a player walks too close to a Worker, the worker will become hostile until the player gets far enough from the Worker.

Myrmex Soldier

The Soldier serves as the Workers' bodyguards, following them and protecting them from nearby threats.

Soldiers are hostile towards any players that get too close to the hive, or any Workers. If a Soldier cannot find a Worker to protect, the Soldier will stay with the Queen until it finds a Worker to protect.

Myrmex Sentinel

The Sentinel is the deadliest of all the Myrmex castes. It lurks near the entrance of the hive in an ambush posture, camouflaging itself with the block that makes up their environment (Desert Sentinels will disguise to look like sand, and Jungle Sentinels will disguise to look like leaves). Once a prey item or intruder gets near, it will attack its target relentlessly. They can also grab their target with it's front arms and rapidly bite them until the target dies or breaks free.

Myrmex Royal

The Royal is a hive's means of establishment. Upon leaving a hive, it will fly around in search of another Royal. Once two Royals find each other, they start emitting heart particles, quickly fly into each other, fall down to the ground, and start mating. Once this process is over, one of the Royals dies while the other becomes a Queen and digs into the ground, thus spawning a new colony. But, attempting to find a mate can be pretty dodgy, since Royals will usually stay near the hive, meaning that Royals usually won't find a mate unless there is another hive nearby.

When flying, Royals will leave players alone, unless players attack them or get too close (which shouldn't happen if you stay on the ground).

When Royals are in the hive, they will attack any players trespassing in the hive.

Royals are unique because they are the only type of Myrmex that have wings and can fly.

Myrmex Queen

A Queen is the matriarch of a hive and its sole means of population. It usually wanders around a single room, constantly laying eggs that hatch into larvae.

Typically there is only one Queen in a hive; without it reproduction will stop and the hive will be left vulnerable to predation. Without its Queen, a Myrmex hive is crippled.

Even though there are soldiers and sentinels to defend the hive, a Queen can also defend herself very well, still being able to left off large amounts of poison from her stinger.

Reputation

A player's Reputation in a Myrmex hive defines the Myrmex's behavior towards them.

Reputation can be increased by:

  • Throwing the corresponding type (Jungle/Desert) of Myrmex Resin Chunk to Workers, increasing reputation by 5.
  • Completing a trade with a Myrmex, increasing reputation by 2.
  • Unlocking a new trade, increasing reputation by 1.

Reputation is decreased by:

  • Attacking a Soldier, decreasing reputation by 5.
  • Attacking a Royal, decreasing reputation by 10.
  • Attacking a Queen, decreasing reputation by 15.
  • Killing any Myrmex, decreasing reputation by 15.
