Thirsty is a status effect gained most of the time while drinking unpurified (dirty) water source, water bottles and unpurified water canteens. You have the same chance of receiving thirsty as you do getting hunger from rotten flesh.

Thirst causes your thirst meter to decrease more quickly, similar to how eating Rotten Flesh causes your Hunger Bar to decrease more quickly.
