Press H for the First Aid menu. You are quite weak at the beginning of the game.

Locational Damage is a major component of survival added by First Aid. The menu can be accessed by pressing H.

How it Works

When first spawning into the world, you can press H to open the First Aid menu and get a quick explanation of how it works. Opening the menu again will allow you to get a visual of how much health each of your body parts has. Each body part has its own effects:

  • Head damage can result in brief periods of Blindness. Taking lethal damage to the head will kill you.
  • Torso damage can result in brief periods of Weakness and Nausea. Taking lethal damage to the torso will kill you.
  • Arm damage can result in brief periods of Mining Fatigue. Taking lethal damage to the arms will inflict you with Mining Fatigue II constantly until healed.
  • Leg and feet damage can result in brief periods of Slowness. Taking lethal damage to the legs or feet will inflict you with Slowness II constantly until healed.
Mini HUD displayed when damaged.

Bandages and Plaster can be used to heal individual body parts precisely; in addition, Morphine can suppress negative effects produced by damaged body parts (with the exception of dying).

In addition to the full First Aid menu, a mini HUD is provided for the player whenever damage is taken that gives an approximation of how damaged your body is. Light green means a part has taken some damage, Yellow means the part has taken damage but is above half health, Orange means the part is at or below half health, Red means the part is almost completely dead, Gray is when the body part has died (when the player get debuffs).

Damage Sources

Certain damage sources affect certain body parts now rather than affecting your whole body. A few examples are:

  • Skeletons will constantly aim for headshots, making them far more dangerous.
  • Drowning will only affect your head and torso.
  • Starvation and Thirst will affect your torso exclusively.
  • Fall damage will affect your legs and feet before going upwards.
  • Falling anvils will do damage to your head.
  • Projectiles will often hit the head if a mob is above you.

Other sources of damage generally affect a random body part.

Due to the fact that your head and torso can be fatally damaged, it is recommended to craft those armor pieces before any others.

Trivia

  • While the old health bar is visible, it is not an accurate representation of how close to death you are and therefore should not be as closely monitored as your Locational Damage.
  • Heart Containers will provide an extra heart to a random body part when used, as well as adding a heart to your total health bar. Again, the old health bar is purely representational and is not always accurate.
