Rocs are large, bird-like creatures in the Lycanite's Mobs mod that fly around the plains and hunt players and other mobs. They are able to safely pick up and drop hostile mobs such as Creepers, making them exceptionally dangerous early on.

Description

Rocs spawns commonly at night and at certain biomes. Plains and Savannah biomes are most likely to spawn a Roc at night.

Once a Roc has spotted its prey, it will swoop in, grab it with its tail-leg claw, fly upwards, and drop it. The higher the Roc flies before dropping, the more damage it can deal.

Rocs spawn in plains and savannahs late in the night.

If a Roc finds a Creeper, it will grab it, fly over where a player is, and drop it next to them. Be careful as this can cause a lot of damage unless you can hit the Creeper back before it blows up.

Spawning

Roc can spawn in biomes that have the following biome tags:

  • Plains
  • Savanna
  • Forest

Roc can not spawn in biomes that have the following biome tags:

  • Snowy

Roc spawners can be found in Dungeons (Vanilla).

Taming

Much like a garden variety of other mobs in the mod, Rocs can be tamed, and will require you to make avian treats and have the knowledge to tame them before you can do so. In order to try and tame one, you should first try killing a lot of these mobs as you have to get Knowledge Rank 2 to tame it. Alternatively, you can use the Soul Gazer to increase knowledge experience by 100. Once you get Knowledge Rank 2, you will likely need a stack or more of treats, because these mobs have a meter that shows you how much more treats you need to fully tame them. They will try to kill you if you keep your guard down while taming one.

If you manage to fill the taming bar to the max. Congratulations! you’ve tamed a mob you can fly around with! Now all you’ll need is an avian saddle and pet armor (so that you don’t die while flying) and you’re ready to take to the skies.

Tamed Abilities

In addition to flying around, tamed Rocs receive a generous health boost and retain their natural ability to pick up mobs and other players (press "x" to use mount ability). This is excellent for safely transporting farm animals, dropping boss mobs from unimaginable heights, and bombing runs thanks to the fact that creepers will now explode shortly after being dropped.

Trivia

  • The Roc is heavily based on the mythology in the Middle East, most notably the story collection One Thousand and One Nights featuring a creature with the similar name. The legendary bird in the mythology and story is described to be a giant bird that can lift even elephants using its giant, sharp talons.
  • The Roc's design may probably be inspired on the Burrowing Snagret from Pikmin, as they both are avian creatures with stork-like heads and a single leg. But since there is no direct mention, this is most likely just a coincidence.
