Guides/How to Slay a Dragon

Killing first Dragon is going to be one of the harder tasks in RLCraft. Not only do they burn you and shoot fireballs at you, they are a tank.

Preparation

Before you fight one, it's recommended that you level your Defense and Attack Skills to 16, so that you're able to use diamond gear. Get an Iron or Diamond-strengthened Longbow and at least 2 stacks of arrows.

Fire Resistance

Being able to use a Brewing Stand is important, too. The next step is getting ingredients for a fire resistance potion:

  • You can get Magma cream from lycanites mobs that spawn from lava pools, Salamanders are guaranteed to drop at least 1-2 magma cream;
  • The fastest way to get Nether wart and other nether plants is, of course, to go to the Nether. Although they're abundant, trying to retrieve one is nightmarishly hard as you will be quickly swarmed by lycanites demons. If the nether portal spawned in open space, it's recommended to build it a few chunks away or try alternatives;
  • Another safer way to get Nether wart is to build and lit a nether portal, which will occasionally spawn nether enemies. You can get small amount of warts from Belphegors.

The remaining process of brewing is the same as in vanilla.

Alternatively, you can also make Advanced Alchemic Condenser and brew Elixir of Fire Resistance with easier to get ingredients, but more complicated process. But note that unlike potions, elixirs can't be turned into explosive, which lets you apply Fire Resistance to your flying mount.

Buffing

To ease up a fight, you can craft some Battle Burritos (or other lycanite food) which grants you powerful battle Status Effects and brew good quality Wine and Wildberry Wine which extend and intensify your status effects respectively. This combo is useful both in early game and end game.

Enchanting

Protective enchantments on your armor and damage increasing enchants on your weapon will additionally increase your chances of survival.

Summoning

If you have 2 rank of knowledge of certain lycanites, you can summon them to fight for you with Summoning Staff. Since Geonaches give Weight on hit, you can effectively ground dragons by using them in battle.

Tactics

If everything is done you are officially prepared to slay your first dragon.

While immune to their breath, you're still gonna get heavily damaged by their fireballs, and although at close range they don't shoot them, they'll trap you in their jaws and bite you with all their strength. Make sure to keep track of your health and to have Recall Potions or Warp Scrolls in your hotbar so that you can escape if the situation gets too dire.

Do keep in mind that while you're fighting the dragon, some collateral damage may occur to your surroundings. If you're near your base or important village, you could also try killing it from out of its aggression range with Diamond strengthened Crossbow as they have more velocity and range, while being slower than longbows. Alternatively, you could also use the grounding method and kill them at close quarters, so that their breath only destroys small area around you. For this, it's recommended to buff up, have Protection IV on all armor pieces and have some way to heal yourself mid battle: having Lifesteal enchant on your melee weapon, Medikit or Enchanted Medikit, or using Longbow with more costly Iron Arrows in melee range and trying to aim at its body, and finish battle as fast as possible.

Ice Dragons

Ice Dragons require similar preparation, but instead of Fire resistance potions, you will need to make Ice Resistance Potions to be immune to their breath. As they only reside in cold biomes, you'll need to use ways to keep yourself from freezing to death.
