Fishing Made Better
Fishing Made Better is a Mod by TheAwesomeGem that overhauls the mechanics and crafting recipes of Fishing.
Overview
Fishing Made Better adds new features such as a fishing minigame, which must be completed in order to reel in fish, and a new fish population mechanic, in which each chunk contains a limited amount of fish that can be depleted by overfishing.
Minigame
Rather then right clicking when the bobber goes down, a new HUD will appear at the top instead and players must now use the left and right arrow keys to keep the tension bar on the fish with each different fish putting a fight as they struggle to escape
if the Tension bar is not kept on the fish for long enough the fish will retreat further away from you and if enough time passes you may lose the fish, Different biomes, times of day and Y-level will change the HUD background and affect what fish you may catch and how difficult it is to catch the fish fishing further away and using different kinds of bait will also affect this.
A fillet or scaling knife can be used to turn your caught fish into resources or fish to be cooked with higher quality knives having more durability (the requirements aren't needed if its used in the crafting grid)
As you fish in one area for too long fish will start to deplete in that area and too much will cause fish there to go extinct, in order to avoid this a bait box will be needed to breed fish in that area to increase population again
Fish Tracker
Fish Trackers are used to know what kind of fish are in an area.
There are 5 Fish Trackers in RLCraft:
- Iron Fish Tracker (Requires Gathering 8)
- Golden Fish Tracker (Requires Gathering 12)
- Diamond Fish Tracker (Requires Gathering 16)
- Obsidian Fish Tracker (used to probe Lava) (Requires Gathering 20)
- Void Fish Tracker (used to probe Void) (Requires Gathering 24)
In order to use the Void Fish Tracker you need to click on a block near the void, not the actual void.
Magikarps can not be traced with Fish Trackers.
What the tracker says | Population Count |
---|---|
Immense | 50 < population |
Abundant | 40 < population ≤ 50 |
Ample | 30 < population ≤ 40 |
Substantial | 20 < population ≤ 30 |
Numerous | 10 < population ≤ 20 |
Light | 3 < population ≤ 10 |
Sparse | 1 < population ≤ 3 |
Meager | 0 < population ≤ 1 |
Crafting recipes
The old fishing rod no longer works and is instead replaced with a new fishing rod that is crafted using 3 sticks, a bobber, a hook, and a reel.
Once crafted, bait can be applied by combining it with certain seeds, fish, and crops. The hook, reel, and bobber can be replaced by combining it with a new version on the crafting grid. The old part is refunded after it is replaced and enchantments are kept when changing parts
Differences between rods and other accessories
- A wooden fishing rod has 0 requirements but has the least durability (59) of the fishing rods, an iron rod has a requirement of 8 Gathering and offers higher durability (250), and a diamond fishing rod has the highest durability (1561) and requires 16 Gathering.
- Reels can either reel in the fish quicker or cast your rod further to catch different kinds of fish
- Different bobbers can increase the speed the tension bar moves left and right or increase its size whilst and obsidian bobber allows you to fish in lava which is required for any Nether fishing
- Different hooks will allow you to get a quicker bite speed, more treasure, or reduce how hard the fish fight back
Mob Spawns
In RLCraft, every time you cast your line, there is a small chance that a mob will spawn.
If you are fishing in water, there is a 10% chance of spawning one of the following mobs:
Mob Image | Mob Name | Chance to Spawn (of 10%) | Chance to Spawn (after the 10% is applied) |
---|---|---|---|
Abaia | 2.35 % | 23.5 % | |
Abtu | 2.35 % | 23.5 % | |
Roa | 0.3 % | 3 % | |
Silex | 4.7 % | 47 % | |
Skylus | 0.3 % | 3 % |
If you are fishing in lava, there is a 5% chance of spawning one of the following mobs:
Mob Image | Mob Name | Chance to Spawn (of 5%) | Chance to Spawn (after the 5% is applied) |
---|---|---|---|
Afrit | 0.85 % | 17 % | |
Cephignis | 3.3 % | 66 % | |
Salamander | 0.85 % | 17 % |
If you are fishing in void, there is a 5% chance of spawning one of the following mobs:
Mob Image | Mob Name | Chance to Spawn (of 5%) | Chance to Spawn (after the 5% is applied) |
---|---|---|---|
Argus | 0.95 % | 19 % | |
Grue | 3.8 % | 76 % | |
Spectre (Lycanites Mobs) | 0.25 % | 5 % |
Loot
There are two major types of fishing loot: this mod's fishing loot pools and the Level Up! Reloaded loot pool. These loot tables are separate, what you get from one of the pools does not affect what you get from the other pool.
This page only covers the mechanics and loot tables of Fishing Made Better (The Level Up fishing loot can be found here).
Whenever you catch a fish, there is a chance you get an extra item! You have a 10% chance of getting a junk item, and a 5% chance of getting a treasure item (which is the same as in vanilla Minecraft), so you have a 15% (10% + 5%) total chance of getting an extra item.
If you increase your Luck or use a fishing rod enchanted with Luck of the Sea (either base enchantment or Advanced), you still have a 15% of getting an extra item. Though the chance for an extra item stays at 15%, increasing your Luck raises the chance of getting a treasure item and decreases the chance of getting a junk item.

Bait Category
Bait increases the chance of getting a fish that uses that bait, but it's not required to catch it.
How to read:
- First look at which fish you want to catch (see the "fish" table that's after these tables).
- Then look at the "Vanilla Bait Category" and "Aquaculture Bait Category" columns.
- Now, depending on the number (for Vanilla bait) or letter (for Aquaculture bait), you will look at the bait tables to know which bait you can use for the fish you want to catch.
- Example: I want to catch a "Muskellunge". From the "fish" table, I can see that it has the number "1" for the "Vanilla Bait Category", and the letter "B" for the "Aquaculture Bait Category". This means the following baits (that can be seen in the bait tables) are what I should use to try to catch one: Clownfish / Ocean Fish; Spider Eye; Rotten Flesh; Bleugill; Perch; Frog.
Category | Clownfish / Ocean Fish | Spider Eye | Rotten Flesh | Carrot | Potato | Beetroot | Beetroot Seeds | Apple | Seeds | Pumpkin Seeds | Melon | Melon Seeds | Raw Mutton | Raw Porkchop | Raw Chicken | Raw Beef | Raw Rabbit |

Fish
Click here to see the which biomes correspond to each biome tag.
The MinDeepLevel and MaxDeepLevel have nothing to do with actual in-game blocks. If you notice, the reels have a range meter, which is the equivalent of the max depth they can reach. Example: the Fast Reel has 75 m range, and the Long Reel has 150 m range, that means the Fast Reel can not catch whales, because they have a minDeepLevel of 120, while the Long Reel can.
